De acuerdo con las Reglas de Juego de la FIFA

A goal is scored when the whole of the ball passes over the goal line, between the goalposts and under the crossbar, provided that no infringement of the Laws of the Game has been committed previously by the team scoring the goal.

El verbo "to score" es marcar o meter un gol, el sustantivo "score" es marcador o resultado dependiendo el contexto y "scorer" es goleador. Habrás visto frases sencillas como las siguientes

• There was no score at half-time  - en el primer tiempo no hubo goles  
• There is not score yet - Están a cero
• What's the score? - ¿cómo va el marcador?  
• How many goals did your team score? - ¿Cuántos goles anotó tu equipo?"
• The final score was 4-1 - el resultado final fue 4 a 1
• No one has scored yet  -  aún no ha marcado nadie,
  
• They missed a chance to make the score 1-1 - perdieron la oportunidad de empatar/igualar a 1

Vamos a ver los verbos relacionados con las diferentes maneras de marcar un tanto y su vocabulario

To score a goal: marcar un gol

To disallow a goal: anular un gol

To concede a goal: encajar un gol

To score an own goal: marcar en propia puerta

To miss a goal: fallar un gol

To prevent a goal: impedir un gol

• The goalkeeper prevents the ball from entering in his goal (El guardameta evita que el balón entre en su portería)
  
• The goal should have been disallowed for a foul (El gol se debería haber anulado por falta)
• The striker missed a goal (El delantero falló un gol)
• A howler is a goal conceded by a goalkeeper through and error (Una cantada es un gol concedido por un portero como ceonsecuencia de un error)
• The away team nearly conceded the opening goal (El equipo visitante casi concede el primer tanto)
• After a team scores a goal, the kick-off is taken by the other team (Después de que un equipo amrca un tanto, el saque lo realiza el otro equipo)
• They played wonderfully up to the penalty area, but then they did not score a goal ( jugaron maravillosamente hasta llegar al área, pero luego no marcaron ningún gol)
• We were lucky top score with our first real chance and lead at half-time (tuvimos suerte de marcar en la primera ocasión y llegar al descanso con ventaja)

 Son muchas las expresiones inglesas y vocabulario que incluyen "score", vamos con algunas de ellas

• piano score - partitura de piano; film score - banda sonora; top score - puntuación máxima; 
• score of people - un montón de gente
• to have a score to settle with somebody - tener cuentas teniente con alguien
• to settle or pay off old score - saldar viajas cuentas con alguien
• to score a hit - dar en el blanco
• to score with someone - acostarse con alguien
